Today, we're excited to announce the launch of a groundbreaking report, "Harnessing the Economic and Environmental Benefits of Advanced Biotechnology," developed by the Advanced Biotech for Sustainability (AB4S) coalition, of which Cradle is a founding member alongside ten other leading companies in the biotechnology space.
A Bold Vision for Advanced Biotechnology's Future
Released today by the AB4S coalition, this comprehensive report reveals the immense potential of advanced biotechnology to address global environmental challenges while creating substantial economic value. Our collaborative research covers remarkable opportunities by 2040, including:
Reducing global emissions by 3-4 gigatons of CO₂ equivalent (approximately 5% of global emissions)
Freeing up land equivalent to the size of India (2-4 million km²)
Saving 250-500 billion cubic meters of water annually (3-6 times the water flowing through the Nile River)
Creating approximately $1 trillion in economic value, comparable to Switzerland's entire economy
The report demonstrates how up to 60 percent of all physical inputs to the global economy could be produced or replaced using biological methods, transforming industries from agriculture and food to chemicals, personal care, and transportation fuels.
A Powerful Coalition Driving Change
This report represents the collective expertise and vision of the AB4S coalition's founding members: Arsenale Bioyards, Basecamp Research, Cradle, Darwin International, EIT Food, Evonik, Good Food Institute Europe, Invert Bio, Lallemand, L'Oréal, and ShakeUp Factory. Together, these organizations span the entire advanced biotechnology value chain, from research and development to commercial applications across multiple industries. McKinsey & Company provided knowledge and analytical support as the coalition's knowledge partner, helping to quantify the potential environmental and economic impact of advanced biotechnology and develop the strategic framework presented in the report. The coalition has united with a shared commitment to accelerate the adoption of advanced biotechnology solutions and unlock their transformative potential for building a more sustainable world.
Cradle's Role in Shaping a Sustainable Future
As a founding member of the AB4S coalition, Cradle brings expertise in AI and protein engineering to help shape this vision for more sustainable foods and biomaterials. The report identifies three critical priorities for the industry: prioritizing bio-solutions based on market demand, derisking the scaling process, and ensuring cost-effectiveness at scale. These priorities align perfectly with Cradle's mission to help scientists develop better proteins more efficiently in order to bring new sustainable products and production methods to market, and make this vision a reality.
